Aggressive treatment options are still an option. Pericardial mesothelioma is a rarer subtype of the disease and metastatic trends are not yet well known. Less commonly pericardial mesothelioma can also metastasize to the kidneys.

This observation raises the possibility that mediastinal nodes should be considered the primary station in patients with mesothelioma whereas hilar node metastasis necessitated lung invasion first. Stage iii mesothelioma is the first metastatic stage of this cancer. The lymphatic system can catch stray cancer cells and trap them in lymph nodes but there is always a danger that once cancer cells start getting into the lymphatic system they will overwhelm each lymph node in their way one by one until they finally enter the bloodstream. Mesothelioma has spread to lymph nodes and surrounding organs.

There are currently no official staging guidelines for mesothelioma but most doctors use the tnm system.
